Before our souls descended to this world, we lived in a realm where beings communicated not through speech, but through song. Angels sing Divine praises. Even this universe that was formed through the “words of God”, were likely infused with emotion and cadence (as we see in the musical cantillation marks of the Torah reading). God may have “sung” this world into existence.
According to superstring theory, the fundamental constituents of reality are strings that vibrate at resonant frequencies. Absolutely everything in the universe—all of the particles that make up matter and forces—is comprised of tiny vibrating fundamental strings. Even planets deep in space hum with radiation waves. The ancient book of Song -“Perek Shira”, describes how every being, from a blade of grass to a massive planet, is singing the Creator’s praises.
This is why so gravitate to music. It’s the language of our souls. “Speech is the pen of the heart. But a melody is the pen of the soul” [The Alter Rebbe]. It unites us and moves us, calling to our deepest selves. At dawn, King David used to play his harp out of window to wake up his people in Jerusalem. Every evening I sit and listen to inspirational music, delving beyond my outer mind and into my soul, immediately connecting to the source of my life.
CHALLENGE: Find a quiet place alone, in your room or nature. Choose a song that you really connect with, that speaks to you. While listening, imagine how all of creation is singing to its source together in its own language. Notice that you have your own unique song that is your life and personality.
